Spanish Pre-K – Fifth Grade

The goal of elementary Spanish is to:

  • Instill a love and appreciation of the language
  • Better prepare students for future study of the language
  • Maximize each student’s ability to read, write, and speak Spanish
  • Develop an understanding of Hispanic culture

At the elementary level the objective is to enable the students to learn vocabulary and grammar to communicate by listening, speaking, reading, and writing at an introductory level.

Grade Pre-K

Oral Communication:

  • Use basic greetings, numbers 1–10, days, months, colors, and parts of the body
  • Express language through song
  • Recite prayers
  • Imitate oral expressions
  • Pronounce correct sound for each letter of the alphabet

Language Patterns:
Recognize familiar vocabulary in readings by teacher

Media:

  • Use a book in conjunction with a tape recording
  • Incorporate computer-related activities that reinforce language skills

Cultural Awareness:

  • Learn about Holidays, cultures, food, and costumes of Spanish speaking countries
  • Understand central role of family and Church in Hispanic culture

Grades K – 2

Oral Communication:

  • Use basic greetings, numbers 1–20, days, months, alphabet, colors, shapes, and parts of the body
  • Recognize basic vocabulary, clothing, animals, food, classroom objects and family members
  • Express language through song
  • Recite prayers
  • Demonstrate the events of a story (re-telling)
  • Imitate oral expressions
  • Interpret short conversations
  • Respond to oral questions
  • Pronounce correct sound for each letter of the alphabet

Written Communication:

  • Write numbers 1-10 and color words
  • Write the alphabet in order

Language Patterns:

  • Recognize and use correct wording and phrasing
  • Recognize gender and endings
  • Recognize familiar vocabulary in readings by teacher

Media:

  • Use a book in conjunction with a tape recording
  • Incorporate computer-related activities that reinforce language skills
  • Recognize information presented in a video or television program

Cultural Awareness:

  • Learn about Holidays, cultures, food, and costumes of Spanish speaking countries
  • Understand central role of family and Church in Hispanic culture

Grades 3 – 5

Oral Communication:

  • Use greetings, names, prayers, numbers 1–100, days, months, alphabet, colors, parts of the body, clothing, animals, food, household and classroom objects
  • Express feelings and emotions in Spanish
  • Demonstrate ability to formulate verbal questions and answers
  • Interpret and participate in simple conversations
  • Follow simple instructions
  • Present basic oral reports
  • Read orally with expression
  • Read basic text paragraphs and dialogue and answer questions on content
  • Recite correct time
  • Demonstrate ability to follow oral directions

Written Communication:

  • Demonstrate the correct use of full sentences
  • Interpret and write brief written messages
  • Read text paragraphs and dialogue and answer questions on content
  • Demonstrate ability to follow written directions

Media:

  • Use computer software to review and enrich study of Spanish
  • Recognize the main idea of video or television programs

Cultural Awareness:

  • Demonstrate awareness of Spanish speaking countries
  • Identify professions that require proficiency in Spanish
