Welcome to the Library!

There’s always something happening in the MediaCenter.  During their weekly visits, Star of the Sea students are free to peruse the shelves for titles that spark their curiosity.  Whether it’s attending Hogwarts with Harry, Ron, and Hermione; meeting the many colorful characters created by Eric Carle; discovering the inner workings of an atom; or traveling to foreign countries and learning the ways of the people, the possibilities for students to lose themselves in a book are endless.

SCHOLASTIC READING COUNTS

When a student's reading adventure has come to an end, he or she may challenge their knowledge by taking a quiz on Scholastic Reading Counts. These quizzes test a student's comprehension of a book with 10-25 questions that target a variety of details from the story. Each book is "worth" a certain number of points based on its level of difficulty.

At the beginning of each trimester, students are informed of thier new SRC goal for their grade level. Those students who reach their grade level's goal earn the title of "All-Star Reader." All-Star Readers enjoy several rewards for their reading achievements, including a party at the end of each trimester just for them!

Check out the link below.  It will lead you to a listing of all available quizzes according to reading level.  Students may only choose to take quizzes from their grade level or higher.  Quizzes that are too easy are restricted.  Students may request to add a quiz to the database at anytime by posting it on the Wish List Wall.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

There is always something to be done in the Media Center – shelving, cataloging, etc.  If your 6th, 7th, or 8th grader is in need of service hours, he or she is welcome to lend us a helping hand.

BOOK DONATIONS

A new or gently used hardcover book donated to Star of the Sea is always a welcome and much appreciated gift.  Hardcover books appropriate for children in kindergarten through eighth grade are best.

We recognize a student’s generosity by placing a “Book Plate” on the inside cover of the book(s) he or she is donating.  A special “Birthday Book Plate” is used when a student celebrates their birthday by giving one of their favorite books to Star of the Sea.

If you would like a better idea of the titles and items we are hoping to  add to our library please check out the link below!  Thank you for your support!
