Star of the Sea has a Relay for Life® team called "Wheaton's Walkers". We are named after
our beloved school nurse who lost her battle with cancer a few years ago. We walk in memory of
Mrs. Wheaton and all of our loved ones who have lost their lives to this dreaded disease.
Relay for Life®, the signature activity of the American Cancer Society, is an opportunity for the community to get together to help in the fight to find a cure for cancer.
The Star of the Sea School team was formed in October 2000. Since then, the team has volunteered or participated in hair cut-a-thons, dinner-out-nights, raffles, candy grams, crafting jewelry and hand painted mailboxes, and selling Relay for Life luminaries. We’ve even had Community Ambassadors attend the annual Celebration on the Hill in Washington, D.C.
The team has always been a ‘family team’ made of faculty and staff, students, parents and friends. It is in fond memory of a generous supporter, Mrs. Margaret “Peggy” Wheaton, our former school nurse, that the team is now proudly known as the “Wheaton Walkers.”
YOU can help our team by becoming a team member by registering on the Star of the Sea page on the Virginia
Beach Relay For Life web site. You can also help by donating money to light a luminary in honor or memory of a loved one. We will light them in a solemn ceremony with thousands
of other luminaries. Each one is lit with the prayer that our God will give that person His
peace. God bless you for all of your help as we get ready to RELAY. Last year, our school had
over 300 luminaries light our way along the track.
