The curriculum for Star of the Sea Catholic School is based on Diocesan standards for developing and implementing a Consensus Curriculum.  This development process allows all educators to work in a collaborative state-wide effort to design and implement an ever-developing and creative curriculum.  The curriculum is designed to encompass the principles of respect, challenge students to achieve their full potential and contribute to moral development of all students.  It will stimulate logical progression through the intellectual stages of critical analysis, deductive/inductive reasoning, clarity of thought/expression and strategies for problem solving.  The curriculum is reviewed and monitored on an ongoing basis for quality, effectiveness and relevance.

Some of the goals of the consensus curriculum process are as follows:

  • To create a comprehensive curriculum for the entire school system
  • To recognize the professional ability & leadership of all within the system
  • To facilitate professional dialogue among educators in every curriculum area.
  • To create the opportunity for teachers to integrate learning
  • To facilitate the growth of technology in all areas of learning.
  • To create a map of all competencies for all levels and assist integration of curriculum

The curriculum objectives for all grades and subjects can be viewed in pdf format here. The curriculum includes Religion, Social Studies, Math, Fine Arts, Language Arts, Earth and Life Sciences, Foreign Languages, Music, Physical Education and Computer Technology.  The curriculum is designed with a modern learning paradigm focused on Learn/Improve mode to affect student learning in all classrooms of the diocese by promoting:

  • A cooperative, sharing environment
  • Team learning environment for all to gain knowledge and excel versus traditional isolated learning on individual level.
  • An initiative-based environment to allow students to think and learn “outside of the box”
  • Testing as a means of showing improvement rather than just what is learned – build on the foundation of knowledge they learn as they develop

At Star of the Sea Catholic School we are committed to implementing a curriculum designed to introduce children to a new world of learning and spiritual growth.  Children are provided an environment in which to explore the world through reading, writing, music, technology, foreign languages, mathematics and physical education.

Religious Goal:
To guide students in developing a personal relationship with God so that they may grow in an awareness of His ways in their lives.

Academic Goal:
To provide a challenging environment that will enable students to develop their critical thinking skills and achieve a level of competency that assures growth in learning and responsibility.

Social/Emotional Goal:

To guide the students in developing a positive attitude toward themselves and others, thereby appreciating the god-given gifts of all people.

Children will learn that we are all part of God’s creation and that we are gifts from God and they are encouraged to celebrate their uniqueness and the gifts they bring to God, their classroom and community.

They will learn the meaning of community and stewardship respecting the world around them as a gift from God.
